Isla Santa Cruz the second largest island is situated in the center of the archipelago. Puerto Ayora also an official port of entry is the economic center hosting the Galapagos Natonal Park Headquarters and the Charles Darwin Research Station. Most of the tour and yacht operators are located here. The city is very clean, has quaint shops, restaurants with interiors decorated with the most goergeous wood I've ever seen.
We took a guided inland tour with Johnny from Naugala Yacht Services to see the giant tortoise in their own environment, giant lava tube, twin craters and much more.
Our next tour was to Seymour Norte located north of Isla Baltra where we discovered the most beautiful frigate, blue footed boobie birds and seagulls unique to the Galapagos Islands. Mating and nesting season for all the birds is in full swing this time of year. We saw the male frigate birds blow up their throat in hopes of luring in a female and the blue footed boobies doing their perfectly choreographed mating dance. We caught a glimpse of a new born chick in one of the nest.
The sea lions have made Seymour Norte one of the protective shore for their new pups. We saw many sea lion pups under the age of two weeks. This one was only
11 days old. They wait on the rocks for the mothers to come back and feed them.
The Giant Tortoise and Land-Iquana Breeding Center is the most successful project of breeding and rearing of these native species. Here we saw giant tortoises, land iguanas and the cutest, tiniest baby tortoises that are numbered to identify there place of origin.
Tortuga Bay is the most beautiful white-sand beach on the Galapagos Islands. The water is crystal clear, the marine iguanas are everywhere and the sand is like a fresh layer of powdered sugar. Kayaking around in the lagoon we saw black tip sharks, giant manta ray's and blue a footed boobie hanging out with Mr. Iguana.
